A Question of Character

Hey, Death Pixies and accomplices of the Death Pixies, does anyone have a favorite "character questionnaire" that you use to create character profiles or to get to know your characters better? Would you be so kind as to post a link or give us some key questions? I don't usually use them, but I'm feeling the urge. Thanks!

I don't like those character questionnaires because it reads like a dating service and doesn't really tell me what the protagonist would do in a crisis. I do find it useful to decide what astrological sign my character would be, because that gives more insight than a list of likes/dislikes. Any book on star signs will help give you ideas.

I recall having found one of these once, and it wasn't anything I couldn't think of on my own. Name, rank & serial number, mostly. I have had fun playing with another tool, though. It's called The Book of Questions, and it has bizarre things in it like "Would you walk down a city street naked for $100? For $1 Million? If you knew nothing bad would happen to you?" or "What's the most embarrassing thing that could happen to you?" I will sometimes open up this book and go through several questions & think about how my characters would answer them, and (possibly more interestingly) why they would answer them that way. It's more fun than a list, and gets me a lot of personality (and the occasional story idea), too.

I've tried these and haven't found them helpful either. What works for me, in terms of getting a really good feel for a someone, is thinking about how they get along with other people. I have a chart I use for my novel which has the characters' names going vertically and horizontally. I fill in what each character thinks/feels about every other character (including themselves). I also write a bit about their past and how they get along with their family members (if they don't appear in the story). Sarah
